DETROIT – The holiday was much quieter Thursday for most Metro Detroiters.
Many did change plans because of the COVID pandemic, but one tradition was still alive and well — people taking the time to help others.
“I think it’s important to get involved for this national holiday,” said Genevieve Vang with Bangkok 96. “It’s a great time to give back to the city.”
For years, Vang has volunteered to cook for families in need during Thanksgiving. The free meals were given away at the third annual “Full Plates, Full Hearts” event.
The Detroit Shipping Company and both the Michigan and Detroit restaurant and lodging associations hosted the event.
Serving up to 300 people, individual meals were packed and delivered to three local non-profits — Alternative For Girls, Coalition On Temporary Shelter (COTS) and Neighborhood Service Organization. Devenea Jackson, who helped with the event, is teaching her son lessons that will last a lifetime.
“Don’t take life for granted, that’s what I want him to take from today,” Jackson said.
