HARPER WOODS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Harper Woods Mayor Valerie Kindle said the city plans on demolishing the Eastland Mall to develop a new Class A industrial facility.

Construction is set to begin at the beginning of 2022 upon approval from the planning commission and city council.

“We think it will work well for the city of Harper Woods and the surrounding areas,” vice president of North Point Development Tom Conder said.

The proposed $94.2 million development will consist of three buildings, stretching across one million square feet.

The development team is headed by Kansas City-based NorthPoint Development, and LoPatin & Co., a Farmington Hills-based full-service development company.

“This is a major step forward in reinvigorating the City of Harper Woods,” Mayor Kindle said. “The redevelopment of Eastland into Class A industrial space will create good-paying jobs, increase funding for schools, police, and fire and provide a strong tax base to allow us to potentially cut taxes to our citizens.”

The redevelopment of Eastland Mall will create 250 construction jobs and 560 permanent jobs when completed in April 2023.

“We’re very excited about this,” city councilman Ivery Toussant said. “Most of the citizens are very excited to see something positive with Eastland.”
